Air layering is the ideal method of making new plants and collect suitable bonsai material.
Air Layering suitable material will give you quick access to good bonsai material or plants that you want for your garden.
The air layering kit includes one air layering pod as well as enough sphagnum moss to fill the pod.
Its a quick and easy kit to use for air layering.
Method
Find a suitable branch to air layer.
Ring bark the branch where you want the new roots to form.
Remove a bark strip equal to the thickness of the branch.
You can now add rooting hormone to the cut if necessary.
Place sphagnum moss in both spheres of the air layer pod.
Bring the two spheres together with the cut in the middle and close the clips to keep the air layer pod in place.
Place the transparent sphere at the bottom so that you can see when new roots form.
Water regularly
When the pod is full of new roots the air layer can be removed and potted into a suitable container.
Do not untangle the roots when you remove the air layer. Plant the root ball as is. If you want to spread out the roots wait till next repotting season.
Sphagnum moss is a very good substrate for air layering.
It retains a lot of moisture without being soggy.
Its got some anti-fungal properties, helping to prevent root rot.
The air layering pod is suitable for branches up to 1 cm in diameter. For thicker trunks use the plastic bag method.
